Yoursay: Umno should detoxify itself before thinking about returning to power

YOURSAY | 'Umno, in its current form or leadership, has no place in Malaysia.'

Report: Umno MPs signed SD which empowers Zahid to court Harapan

The Wakandan: How the mighty have fallen. The disclosure that there is a statutory declaration to negotiate with Pakatan Harapan with a view to be in the government is an admission that Umno realises that the water has reached its nose. Drowning is inches away.

What a pathetic end to a once very proud party, a self-proclaimed champion of the Malays. Alas, the present bunch of Umno leaders were more interested in enriching themselves, apparently as a result of getting soft with an easy life and taking support from the Malays for granted.

They were carried away without any tangible cause to fight for, as they had everything - economy, governance, education, religion, civil service and even the dangerous racial superiority. Everything that they wanted, they had.

Now was the time to share the spoils, which they did as a given. They bragged about being driven in Mercedes cars to Umno conferences in Putra World Trade Centre, unlike before, where their likes had to trek by Mara buses from all over the states.

However, the majority of the Malays are still in a hapless state and did not experience any improvement. And that resulted in Umno’s downfall.

Their greed, which naturally turned into crimes, ensured a deservedly poetic end.

Harapan should wise up to know that Umno is a has-been. There should not be any deal with them. If their members want to join Harapan, it should be on an individual basis and based on merit. No deadwood, please.

David Dass: Umno MPs signing a statutory declaration to empower their leader Zahid Ahmad Hamidi to court the ruling Harapan is a strategic move by the opposition party. This is to prevent individual crossovers.

An impression is created that Umno could still be a force and that it could form the government, in combination with, say, PKR.

They appear to be making a play for Harapan de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, sensing possible conflicts within the ruling coalition - perhaps with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Will Anwar play? Will he be interested? It could be bait for a dangerous trap. Will Anwar or his supporters think that this could be a way to keep Mahathir in check?

I ask the questions but find the intrigues quite exhausting. But politicians will do what they do.

Anonymous_f37de788: Indeed, this is one cunning tactic to destabilise the coalition of Mahathir and Anwar.

BN knows that it will never be accepted into Harapan. This is just purely a strategy to let Harapan infighting destroy itself. I hope everyone realises this.

Newday: Firstly, why a statutory declaration? What is its purpose as a legal document? Umno is increasingly making no sense in its undertakings.

Does it not trust its fellow members to make a firm decision on behalf of the party? This just shows the level of mistrust that exists within the party. The fear of internal sabotage is rife.

Secondly, PKR - if there is even a sniff that you will partner up with Umno now or into the near future, you better start making plans to be in political purgatory for some time to come.

The sense of betrayal for all those who voted for you in the 14th general election (GE14) will be overwhelming.

Ruben: All Umno wants is a fast path back to join the government of the day. How shallow, crude and hypocritical their options are - join PAS or make peace with, especially, PKR.

Instead, they should be reforming themselves to fill their rank of leaders with those who want an inclusive agenda for all races for a much better Malaysia.

Quigonbond: These senior Umno politicians don't realise how damaging it is for them to say they are prepared to do anything to get back to power.

Malaysians should mark this down as the real Umno, where all the religious and racial posturing are nothing more than means to an end.

In truth, they don't have any real ideology or platform, except a desire for power and money.

Anonymous_07df3758: Everyone here should read Hishamuddin Rais's series of articles in the Bahasa Malaysia version of Malaysiakini to understand why Padang Rengas MP Nazri Abdul Aziz is saying all these things, especially regarding the events on May 9 and the days after the election relating to ‘Projek Sailang’.

It looks like Hishamuddin may have been on the right track. I really hope Anwar and PKR won't be turncoats.

Simple Malaysian: Umno, in its current form or leadership, has no place in Malaysia. The rakyat will punish any party which thinks Umno should be allowed to lead the country.

Until and unless Umno cleanses itself of greed for power, corruption, its tainted past and racist approach to governance, there is no way it should be allowed into any form of partnership.

In short, we need to see a reformed Umno, which has rid itself of its baggage and found a new lease of life via young and dynamic leaders.

Ipohcrite: I don't think the rakyat voted for Harapan into government in order for it to join forces with Umno.

As far I'm concerned, the government should have nothing to do with Umno, a party that is so hell-bent on divisive politics and policies that the rakyat have so clearly rejected in GE14.

If ever Umno dreams of making a comeback into government, it must first detoxify itself of its toxic politics first. As it is, I see nothing to even suggest that Umno wants to do that.
