Brazil’s Lula believes his predecessor conspired to topple government, assassinate him

The Brazilian president expressed confidence that police and the general prosecutor’s office had conducted a thorough investigation before bringing the case to court

BUENOS AIRES, March 27. /TASS/. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, had clearly conspired to topple the government.

"The [former] president clearly attempted to stage a coup in the country, and he obviously contributed to a plot to assassinate me," G1 news quoted the Brazilian leader as saying during a visit to Japan.

Lula expressed confidence that police and the general prosecutor’s office had conducted a thorough investigation before bringing the case to court. "Bolsonaro will stand trial as an individual, trial over a coup conspiracy," the Brazilian president added.

On Wednesday, Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled to charge Bolsonaro and his seven allies who prosecutors said had conspired to overthrow the legitimate democratic regime, stage a coup, and damage cultural heritage.

The investigation believes that Bolsonaro was aware that the military who played a role in the plot had sought to bar Lula from assuming the president’s post and even planned to kill him in December 2022. The former president has denied accusations saying that he is being politically persecuted to ensure he never appears on a ballot until 2030.
